Ahead of the publication of She Performs’ Year in Review, we’re delighted to share this Artist Spotlight by Naomi Morris, who was an integral part of our 2020. Naomi won the open call for our exhibition, She Performs: The Body (20 February - 8 March 2020, The Glass Tank, Oxford) with her video installation, Revealed/Concealed (2017) and gave a one-off performance of another work live in the gallery space (pictured above).

Whose work are you loving these days?

The last thing that absolutely blew me away was Candoco at the Riley Theatre in Leeds who performanced ‘Face In’ by Yamseen Godder. Her approach to working with a company of diverse dancers, some you might label as physically disabled but I prefer to use differently-abled, is inspiring.  Godder says ‘our face is often a mask and our mask is also another part of our being’ and ‘facing up to who we are and not being afraid’. This is something I connect with and find encouraging. You could see these dancing bodies were loud, provocative and highly proficient and they definitely had something to say. I heard them loud and clear.

What’s on your mind?

What’s on my mind is whether or not what I say with my body needs to be translated into words or can it stand alone as a form of communication - my way of communicating.

How does the body - yours and others' - influence your work?

My body is the work. It’s about being seen, or not seen.

Naomi lives and works in Oxford, UK.
