ARTISTS TO WATCH (A2W)

Lydia Blakeley

We’ve been following Lydia since our studio visit with her in April of 2019. In the last few weeks amazing things have come from this tremendously talented painter. One of the most amazing ones I’d say is her collab with Acne Studios. For their AW20 collection, they have collaborated with Lydia and you can now buy skirts, blouses, the works with prints of Lydia’s amazing series of show dogs from 2019. From the same body of work with the idea of painting found footage with focus on the animal in the picture and a cropped person holding the animal in one way or another, there’s currently a signed limited edition Risograph available through Elephant Magazine. Get yourself one before they’re gone!

Lastly, her latest success is worth mentioning. Lydia has painted portraits of essential workers, among them her aunt Jaqui who is a NHS nurse at a community hospital in the UK. She’s painted without a mask and in a field of flowers, contrasting her daily life at work. These works are part of ‘Everyday Heroes’, a public exhibition at the Southbank Center in London, celebrating the contributions of key workers and frontline staff during the pandemic.

Dominika Bednarsky

You should definitely keep an eye out for this artist. Working in ceramics, Dominika creates wonderful and curious sculptures. The latest ones are currently in a group show at Galerie Anita Beckers in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. These quite big and intricate ceramics are masterfully crafted and show a real understanding of the craft. The Compositions seem almost painterly and invite us to explore them from every side, revealing a narrative of wondrous creatures.

Dominika who currently still is a student at the renowned Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach, Germany, already has her next exhibitions lined up at the Kunstvererein Wiesbaden and the Opelvillen Rüsselheim, as well as at TOR Art Space in Frankfurt. For these next exhibitions she will produce new works.
